5 Reasons Why Authors Should Use Instagram

If you are looking to broaden your audience on social media and grow your fan base in a fun and easy way, Instagram just might be the answer you are looking for. I love Instagram for many reasons, but two being that a) it creates visual content that you can use on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, etc., and b) it connects you with a wider audience and exposes your work to new readers.

If you are on the fence about adding another social media outlet to your arsenal, here are five reasons why you should strongly consider Instagram:

1) You Look At The World Differently

As writers we create word pictures, allowing the reader's imagination to craft a visual in their head of a story we are trying to share. With Instagram we don't need words...the image does the talking for us. And the search for an image makes us look at the world differently, more creatively. It's a wonderful creative tool that forces you to look at what you have around you in a more interesting way. It's also a good motivator to get up and out of your normal surroundings to find interesting things to Instagram!

2) Makes You Look At Your Life In A More Interesting Way

The stack of books on your desk, the light peeking through your window, the way your dog fell asleep on your couch all lends itself to make an interesting visual, especially with the cool filters Instagram offers. It gives your readers an interesting glance into your everyday life.

3) It Creates Conversations

We are visually stimulated people. When you share an image that evokes an emotion, a memory, a common thread that you share with someone, it creates conversations. It let's others get to know you in a different way and connect with them on a new level. New fan can leave a comment, ask a questions, share their thoughts, and you can carry a conversation with them, getting to know them better. Images are a great way to start conversations with new fans.

4) It Creates Content

Creating new and fresh content is what keeps your pulse alive online. By creating reasons for fans to connect with you through the content you produce you give them a reason to keep returning to your blog, your website, and your social media outlets. Instagram offers you a new way to create content, not only through your Instagram profile but by sharing your Instagram images on Facebook, Twitter, your blog, Tumblr, and more. Great visuals are very important to your online presence and Instagram is an easy way to not only connect with your audience but create new content.

5) Connects You With A New Audience

Instagram is very popular among a younger demographic. Women 18-29 lead the charge for Instagram with it leaning more towards the African-American and Hispanic populations.  While Facebook and Twitter are by and far the most popular of the social media outlets, Instagram is a great way to not only broaden and extend your fan base but allow you to stand out more online.

A great example of an author using Instagram the right way is DeVon Franklin. DeVon's audience exploded when he started using Instagram. He knew his audience, he knew how to connect with them, and he created visuals that reflected that. He also uses the visuals he creates on his Facebook & Twitter accounts. He does a great job not only connecting and communicating with his audience, but he's consistent and creative.
