Anybody There??

When you share a post on social media, do you feel like you’re yelling into a void? That’s a feeling many authors have because of one simple reason: they don’t have a crystal clear understanding of who they’re talking to.

This is the most vital step in establishing a solid and successful foundation for your book marketing. The best way to do this is to have an ideal reader in mind. And we can do this by creating what we call an Ideal Reader Profile.

Why is having an Ideal Reader Profile important? Because if you don’t have this, there’s a very good chance that your marketing is going to be very general and generic, which is ineffective in today’s world. On Amazon alone there are over 800,000 Kindle books - there is no shortage of options for readers out there!

To be seen in today’s over-saturated world you can’t just blend in with everything else if you want to be visible and make an impact on your sales.

Your Ideal Reader Profile will enable you to connect with readers who are actually interested in your books. It’s a lot easier to market to people who are interested in what you write about, rather than trying to connect with people who don't.  If you aren’t attracting your ideal readers you’ll have trouble converting online followers into customers.

And here’s the great part: once you do this exercise it will make your marketing so much easier and much more effective. You will actually hit your goals a lot faster because you’ll know exactly who you want to reach, making them easier for you to find.

Once you get into the mind of your ideal reader you understand what they are looking for. You can write more effective social media posts, your blogs will be relatable, and you will know where they will be online.

It’s a powerful way to look at marketing. It’s not about “Hey! Look at me and my book!!” It’s more about, “How can I connect with others who share similar interests with me?”

Now, you might be thinking, “Jenn, I already know who my target market is.” Here’s why focusing on a “target market” won’t work - it’s way too broad and way too general. It doesn’t articulate the values, beliefs, qualities and interest that personally connect you with other people. In other words, it lacks soul!

A general “target market” audience lacks the empathetic connection that we need to create with our readers. It doesn’t dig deeper into the personal psychology of your reader, which is where the connection trigger and the buy trigger live.

An Ideal Reader Profile teaches you and prompts you to get into your reader’s head and see life through their eyes.

This is a level of understanding and empathy that authors crave but hardly anyone is giving that to them! Stop thinking like you and turn yourself into your reader. Start thinking and feeling like your ideal reader.

Move forward with a clean slate - be willing to look at this with fresh eyes. It’s a bit of a mind adjustment, but it’s a powerful one!
